With the Crocco collection, Rome-based company Slamp's Nigel Coates — its creative director since 2007 — plays with light in a visionary, innovative way. Presented at Euroluce 2013, the collection consists of a series of wall lamps with a shiny steel support and a moulded Lentiflex® shade in different hues, bringing softness to a sinuous form.
Coates explains the two interconnected ideas behind Crocco — a short name for crocodile, an animal which the lamp’s twisting contours seek to evoke: “The first was to create a modular lamp that could generate large wall or ceiling compositions. I also wanted to explore a boomerang form showcasing the qualities of this material, Lentiflex®. With a slash along the back, it opens like a mouth.”

Compared to other existing plastic polymers, Lentiflex® is versatile, able to change enourmously with diverse light sources. In Crocco, the special process applied gives it a “faceted” surface, as if formed of numerous small prisms. By overlapping two layers of material with a 12° inverse slant, Lentiflex®, like water, changes its appearance and colour when viewed from different angles. The material's “scratched” texture generates a fresnel effect. This allows the light to pass through in a subdued manner. Simultaneously, the bulb's light is maximised, avoiding glare and producing changing shades of colour.
"This captivating material works different forms of magic according to the folds and curves created in the product", concludes Coates, when asked about the design advantages of working with Lentiflex®.
