"To be creative you need constraints, the designer creates them by himself," adds Andrew who studied at the prestigious Architectural Association and now splits his time between London and Milan. The constraints here are the components of the system: a bamboo stick with three holes, a plastic pin that serves as a connector and two caps. The choice of bamboo was almost logical because they wanted to begin production in China. "Bamboo is sustainable, it grows back in six months as opposed to a tree that takes 10 years - plus it's a local tree." As for stability, "Bambica can support if it is supported. You have to understand very well what the most solid forms are. After the circle, the triangle, for example, is the strongest form."
The initial idea was to sell Bambica exclusively on the Internet but after MoMA included it in its stores and other retailers have decided to distribute it through more conventional channels, the two partners might change their minds.
