Massimiliano Gioni is the Artistic Director of the Nicola Trussardi Foundation in Milan, and Associate Director and Director of Exhibitions at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. In 2010, he curated 10,000 Lives, the 8th Gwangju Bienniale.

Gioni curated the 4th Berlin Biennial (Berlin 2006) with Maurizio Cattelan and Ali Subotnick, with whom he also runs the Wrong Gallery and edits the magazines Charley and the Wrong Times, designed by Conny Purtill. Gioni has also co-curated Manifesta 5 (San Sebastian, 2004), and the Zone for the 50th Venice Bienniale (2003). Gioni has often collaborated with the Dakis Joannou Collection and the Deste Foundation in Athens, where he was involved in the exhibitions Monument to Now (2004), The Fractured Figure (2007 and 2008), and A Guest + A Host = A Ghost (2009).

With the Nicola Trussardi Foundation in Milan he has curated special projects and solo shows by, among others, Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset, Darren Almond, Maurizio Cattelan, John Bock, Urs Fischer, Anri Sala, Martin Creed, Paola Pivi, Pawel Althamer, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Tino Sehgal, Tacita Dean, and Paul McCarthy.

In New York, at the New Museum, Massimiliano Gioni has curated with Richard Flood and Laura Hoptman the inaugural cycle of exhibitions Unmonumental (2007), After Nature (2008), an international exhibition that brings together contemporary artists (Pawel Althamer, Maurizio Cattelan, Nathalie Djurberg, Zoe Leonard and many others), outsiders and cult figures like Werner Herzog, August Strindberg and Eugene Von Breuchenhein, Younger Than Jesus (2009), the first American museum solo show with Swiss artist Urs Fischer titled Urs Fischer: Marguerite de Ponty (2009) and the exhibition The Imaginary Museum: Dakis Joannou Collection (2010).
