The transformation of an apartment in Taranto by studio biro+ has aimed to make its layout more functional by optimally exploiting the orientation, and specifically by focusing on the use of colour and fixed furniture. Originally the house, distributed over 160 square metres, appeared as a sequence of narrow and rather dark spaces characterised by a spatial subdivision that did not facilitate functions and circulation.

The 2+one house project has more clearly divided the sleeping area located to the north from the living area facing east, while the services were kept in their original position, achieving a radical redefinition of the apartment layout and enhancing at the same time the value of spaces, even the smallest or most hidden ones.
The project has shaped a space with a clean, graphic appearance, where solid colours and simple geometries emerge. Multi-purpose furniture and sliding doors transform the rooms by providing an adaptive response to the users' needs: a multi-functional storage unit is located between the entrance and the living room, acting as a pocket emptier with mirror, coat rack and shelf, while in the large living area – which features an integrated bookcase – a sliding door can unveil or conceal an intimate and protected dining space. Fundamental is the design of main and secondary pathways: the one dictated by the laundry, for instance, generates a separate “service” connection between the rooms and the kitchen.
Colours are the protagonists of this interior, generating visual paths and a dialogue between the spatial units: blue, pastel green and red emerge and combine their simultaneous presence, together with smooth wooden surfaces and white walls that amplify space .
