New life for textile waste

Textile artist Liz Collins and Sunbrella® present (re)Material Culture, an immersive installation to be presented at Galleria Rossana Orlandi.

A holistic and immersive installation to re-imagine how textile waste can come to life in new and exciting ways: the (re)Material Culture project is a collaboration between textile artist Liz Collins and Sunbrella®, a leader in the innovation of high-performance fabrics and products. (re)Material Culture is an eye-catching, material installation: a space enveloping with hand-applied, fur-like square tiles made from recycled Sunbrella® selvedges that exude a wild and innovative energy. The material used is a by-product of the industrial weaving process and is at the centre of a visual symphony that inspires a reinterpretation of the use of selvedge and celebrates boundless design. Focusing on the raw inventiveness of the material, the collaboration highlights the beauty achievable through circular production. Every element of the space is wrapped in selvedge Sunbrella® fabric, including the walls, Gloster's upholstered Grid sofa, cushions, knitted garments and bags for an immersive experience. In the installation, textures, patterns and recycled stories converge to create a space that resonates with the ethos and values of Sunbrella®, Liz Collins and Gloster.

In line with the overall theme of Milan Design Week 2024, 'Materia Natura', which emphasises a profound exploration of the intrinsic relationship between these elements, (re)Material Culture aims to illuminate the beauty made possible by circular production, encouraging designers and consumers to reimagine the possibilities offered to design by upcycling. In keeping with the theme of sustainability and renewal, Liz Collins cleverly transforms the original panels of the 2019 Summit Suite installation into small square tiles meticulously hand-applied on the walls of the space. This inventive metamorphosis of the Sunbrella® selvedge creates an exciting new checkerboard pattern, breathing new life into the past and aligning perfectly with the brand's commitment to reducing environmental impact.
