It is 80 years since Charles Eames and Ray Kaiser (an unlicensed architect and a painter) founded their design studio. Charismatic and naive, the Eameses applied their talents to different areas of art and culture, from architectural design to documentary film, profoundly influencing tastes and trends in America (and beyond) since the 1940s. To celebrate the eightieth year of the Eames Office, the Isetan The Space gallery in Tokyo is presenting a major exhibition entitled "80 Years of Design", which traces their career: from their best-known projects and classic furnishings with Herman Miller and Vitra, to their latest celebratory collaborations (see the snickers made with Reebok).

At the entrance to the exhibition space we find a 6-metre long timeline that illustrates the highlights of the studio, dividing its history into three phases: Charles and Ray's life and shared work (1941-1978), Ray's work after Charles' death (1978-1988), and the studio's activity to date (1988-2021). The exhibition is also divided into three thematic areas: experiments in the fields of art and technology, architectural and interior projects, and works related to childhood, education and play. The first collaboration between Isetan and the Eames Office dates back to 1961, and is an important part of Charles and Ray's love for Japanese culture. From their first trip to Japan in the 1950s to their constant dialogue with Japan's most renowned architects and designers of the 20th century, the Eames family have been inspired by a country that has always maintained the relationship between tradition and modernity.
