19 chairs in 19 days for 19 designers

The charity initiative organised by Tom and Will Butterfield involves a large group of international designers.

19 Chairs is a project by brothers Tom and Will Butterfield, two British designers who, in response to the health emergency, developed a charity initiative in support of two non-profit organisations: Age UK and Resourcing Racial Justice. The project began with an exercise in style by the two designers, who simply used square strips of wood and screws to make one chair a day for 19 consecutive days. The result is a collection of furniture that is all different but unified by character and material.

They then asked 19 international designers – including Sabine Marcelis, James Shaw and Tom Dixon – to use their designs as a starting point for the creation of a new chair with a unique personality. Once shipped to 19 different destinations, the furniture has been reworked and is now back in Tom and Will Butterfield's London studio. Throughout March 2021, the designers will hold an online auction to support non-profit groups, while also showing the public the result of the creative process.
