The Design Museum Den Bosch presents a retrospective on Geert Lap

The exhibition “Specific Objects” showcases the ceramic pieces of the Dutch minimalist maestro in a scenography designed by Aldo Bakker.

With the exhibition “Specific Objects” – on show from June 1st to August 18th 2019 – the Design Museum Den Bosch (’s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands), the former Stedelijk Museum, pays tribute to ceramist and designer Geert Lap (1951-2017).

Trained at the prestigious Gerrit Rietveld Academie, the Dutch master is known for having embraced the simple lines and geometric abstraction of post-war minimalist artists such as the Dutch André Volten and the American Carl Andre, applying them to functional objects.

Through a vast selection of monochrome ceramics – ranging from large vases to tableware – the exhibition celebrates the essential and well-balanced forms designed by Lap. Conceived as an exhaustive overview that explores every phase of the designer’s career, the exhibition presents – along with other pieces from the museum’s own collection – also the “99 Variations” series, which is exposed in its entirety for the first time since its completion 25 years ago.

The Design Museum Den Bosch, that with “Specific Objects” continues its tradition of monographic exhibitions – which include, among the others, those on Bart Hess, Wieki Somers, Maarten Baas and Ettore Sottsass – invited Aldo Bakker to design the scenography and to create a dialogue between his own language, which is imbued with organic forms, and the minimalism of Lap.
