“All too often, new concepts for flying are focused on innovation in business class. We were excited to find new ways to improve and add value to the economy class experience,” says Benjamin Hubert, founder of Layer. Following the studio’s attempt to release innovative projects that shape the way we live, “Move” is a one-of a kind airbus sit for short distance travel. It differs from the usual aircraft seats thanks to an extremely lightweight aluminium and carbon fibre structure – which reduces weight and the use of less-sustainable materials – and features a smart fabric that adapts to the passenger who sits on it. The seat does not recline, but its smart fabric lining incorporates conductive wires connected to a series of sensors that measure the tension on the fabric and temperature, and adapts accordingly.

Layer, Move, 2019

The seat is connected to an app where passengers can make use of extra functions such as “massage”, “sleep” or “lunch”, for an all-round ergonomic experience. The fabric, easily removable and washable, is made of polyester and wool to provide strength and a good tactile experience. The tray table can be adjusted to different heights suitable for working, watching movies from mobile devices, eating, or even sleeping. The seat should therefore adapt to all types of passengers in terms of age, height and weight. Armsets are completely stowable to guarantee more freedom of use.
The project, the result of 18 months of research, has been carried out together with a group of regular travelers who have identified the “pain points” of the current experience in economy class.
