Materioteca, showcasing the world of plastic

What's in store when petroleum starts to be in short supply?

In this case, we're not talking about the search for alternative energy sources but remembering that petroleum is currently the raw material used in the production of most plastics. This concern, and considerations related to it, is one of the factors that lead to the creation of Materioteca, a new space in which the world of design meets the plastics industry, based in the old factory buildings at via Savona 97. Researchers in the world of plastics have been addressing the challenge of doing without petrol for some time , experimenting with new methods for making alternative materials. They need visibility however, places in which to share knowledge and proposals and so establish a culture of plastic materials via direct and personal experience of the most innovative results of the research. Materioteca, lead by Diana Castiglione, offers first and foremost a showcase, an exhibition organised in four sections where plastics can be seen and touched, displaying current uses and those under development. An articulated collection of samples is presented, complete with technical specifications and manufacturing details, information regarding the characteristics and advantages/disadvantages of the processing of different polymeric families as well as a gallery of objects and components with indications on how the materials respond to different processes. Alongside this area of technological study, a new product is presented, chosen by the team at Materiateca for its innovative qualities. Loredana Mascheroni
