The Design Museum in London opens up its galleries to the minimal and functional projects of Sam Hecht and kim Colin, founders of Industrial Facility. “For us design binds material to the concept of pure necessity.” This is one of the mottoes of the London studio that in 2003 was joined by Japanese designer Ippei Matsumoto. From furniture to domestic appliances, their approach to design has won the trust of many important players in the world of design such as Hermann Miller, Lacie, Established & Sons, Yamaha and Muji, one of the studio’s longest-standing clients, for whom Industrial Facility has designed over 50 articles. On show from May 9 to September 7 are the most recent projects, along with the curious collection that Hecht has put together over the years, featuring around 100 objects that cost “under a fi ver”. These objects from all over the world describe different cultures and have a precise role within the studio: to suggest, wherever possible, the use of local resources. E.S.
