Clean air

What if the quality of the air inside our homes is actually worse than outside? It seems that, particularly in hot and humid seasons, the level of pollutants emitted by the plastic that covers furniture and everyday objects is particularly high.

Once again, design comes to the rescue in the search for a solution and based on research carried out in the 1980s by NASA, a system of air-purification for domestic use has been developed. Designed by French designer Mathieu Lehanneur with scientific support from Harvard University, “Bel Air”, is a miniature mobile greenhouse to purify the environment from pollutants given off by plastic. The air is drawn in and filtered by the leaves and roots of the plant, passed through a humid bath and .pushed out again into the outside environment.

The prototype will be presented as part of the exhibition “Design and the Elastic Mind” that opens on February 24 at MoMA. Giulia Guzzini
