Rock epic

Setting up an exhibition dedicated to the genesis and early development of rock’n’roll in the United States (from the explosion of boogie in 1939 to the events of the late 1950s) is certainly a tough task. The Fondation Cartier, however, is not new to challenges, and so with posters, records, rare vintage objects, photographs, films, music and sound, it is attempting to describe (until October 28) the 20 years of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard.

Setting up an exhibition dedicated to the genesis and early development of rock’n’roll in the United States (from the explosion of boogie in 1939 to the events of the late 1950s) is certainly a tough task.

The risk is that you end up assembling a mere sequence of relics, memorabilia and collectors’ fetish objects. The Fondation Cartier, however, is not new to challenges, and so with posters, records, rare vintage objects, photographs, films, music and sound, it is attempting to describe (until October 28) the 20 years of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, widening the view to embrace the social, cultural and artistic changes of an era.
