“The general trend is to go towards artificial light. Even so, people are starting to notice the value of natural light.” This is how Kengo Kuma sums up the complexity of the subject chosen for the International Velux Award, which aims to provide an opportunity for some pragmatic thinking to those who use natural light as an essential design element. The winning design came from Denmark: the degree project of 27-year-old Louise Groenlund who used the camera as a metaphor for setting out and building a photography museum. Spain and Great Britain took second and third prizes: Gonzalo Pardo Diaz from Madrid with “A place for reading”, three-dimensional network, a work table in perennial construction made from fragments, that is incomplete like a forest; and Anastasia Karandinou, a scottish student of Greek origin, with “Light Invisible Bridges,” a project that mixes theoretical knowledge regarding the quality of light with research carried out in the city of Shanghai. The second event organised by Velux in Bilbao continues the theme of light and architecture, but on a different scale: the presentation of the concept house Atika, intended for Mediterranean habitations. This itinerant demonstrational project explores the interaction between architecture, the maintenance of a constant temperature inside the house, and energy efficiency, all using the Danish company’s technology.
