Blobjects and Beyond: The New Fluidity in Design

“The right angle is the standard angle and in this sense the symbol of perfection,” wrote Le Corbusier in 1925. 80 years on, with perpendicular lines and angles being banished, contemporary design seems to have taken on another direction, namely that of fluidity. In order to show this the curators of the exhibition “Blobjects & Beyond”, Steven and Mara Skov Holt, have lined up prototypes and designs as well as many everyday objects, drawing from many different fields including furniture, graphics, media and architecture.

A key player in the rise of “blobjects” has been the computer as increasingly advanced hardware and software has become less expensive and as the latest prototyping techniques have thrown open new scenarios to designers at every scale and released them from the limits of the orthogonal. This has also given rise to a new aesthetic, capturing within in it the desires and tastes of contemporary man in a constant search for an emotional link with the objects that surround him. E.S.
