Before becoming one of the most influential critics and curators of photography in the twentieth century, John Szarkowski was also an adept photographer. It is to this lesser known aspect of his career that the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, where Szarkowski was director of the photography department from 1962 to 1991, dedicates a major exhibition.
“As you get older you’re not so interested in seeing things for the first time, but in seeing how they change,” he often said. On show are 75 black and white images organised by subject and technique that is an important testimonial to how urban and rural landscapes of America have changed over the last sixty years. E.S.
