Portraits by Cecil Beaton in London

To mark one hundred years after his birth, the National Portrait Gallery invites the public to discover portraits by one of the greats of contemporary photography, Sir Cecil Beaton (1904-1980).

The British artist, with his photographs, seldom in colour, altered the vision of the world of fashion and brought international attention to ‘British’ style. On show are 150 legendary portraits: Maria Callas, Ingrid Bergman, Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando. With diaries, notebooks filled with sketches and his books, the exhibition also reveals the lesser known side of the many sided Beaton.

He comes through as a person of thousands of unexpected qualities: caricaturist, designer, creator of costumes, writer, decorator and actor. Along with the exhibition are a series of events; films, debates and conferences (“Beaton as a Dandy” 11 March to 19). E.S.
