Mary Ellen Mark’s American Odyssey

“From the very poor to the very rich, I have been a witness to some of the things that make this such an extraordinary country”. These are the words of the American photographer Mary Ellen Mark who is presenting her own personal journey at Milan’s Galleria Sozzani this evening (until 7 December). One hundred and forty photographs – covering thirty-five years of history – exploring America and its multifarious people. From those found at children’s beauty contests and singles haunts to conventions for twins and Ku Klux Klan gatherings. “I have met wonderful people and terrifying people”, says Mark, “One thing is certain, despite all the highs and lows, it has always been an incredible adventure. Since my first days as a photographer, many of my subjects have been people on the edge of or outside our cultural traditions. I have always tried to make my photographs a voice for people with less chance to speak for themselves”. Along with some new ones, the exhibition comprises photographs taken from the major works produced over the years: “Streetwise”, “Beauty Pageants”, “Rural Poverty”, “Texas Rodeos”, “The Damm Family” and “Christian Bikers”.
