“Take a seat”: the Vitra collection on show in Berlin

Two centuries of design, from 1800 up to the present day, over two hundred chairs and an equally rich documentation to accompany them: films, photographs, brochures, models, drawings and prototypes. All this goes to make up the collection of the Vitra Design Museum at Weil am Rhein which on 25 January will be making its debut at the site in Berlin (until 22 June).

From the first pieces – represented by the collection of Karl Friederich Schinkel and the production by the company Thonet – up to the latest projects by the Campana brothers, Ron Arad and Tokujin Yoshioka and including on the way creations by Charles and Ray Eames, Harry Bertoia, Eero Saarinen, Verner Panton and Joe Colombo.

Emphasising the educational aspect of the exhibition is a packed calendar of conferences and guided tours on the history of design, whilst in the café visitors have the chance to make themselves comfortable – for real – on reproductions of some of the most important chairs from the collection.
