Alongside the enormous popularity of his clients corresponds however an approach which combines experimentation with subtle exploration, design which is distinguished by its anti-conventional, ironic and provocative qualities, deliberately going against the sterility of the computer and above all light years away from the mainstream. Often described as more of an inventor than a designer, Sagmeister mixes creativity and craftsmanship to develop an individual solution for each project which is carried out by hand. Many of his works have different levels of interpretation - a postcard can be folded and transformed into a sundial, or the cover of a CD takes on a double life and becomes a turntable. The result is that by combining different means and tools, Sagmeister has given life to an wholly original aesthetic which transports onto quite another plane what is manufactured by the music industry – changing it from a mass product to something unique.
