Tokyo: Designer’s Week opens

Tokyo Designer’s Week opens today and runs until 14 October, an event which began in 1986 as “Designer’s Saturday”, also open to the public, following the same formula as the Milan Furniture Fair since 1997.

As well as the exhibition-trade area – which this year brings together around seventy companies – two major official exhibitions are planned, one dedicated to professionals, the other to students. “Experimental Furniture” is the theme examined by a group of designers – creating 140 products – in an attempt to come up with products which look towards the future, in the words of Shigero Uchida (president of the organisation), to supply “an alternative point of view to a society in which designers are considered just to be builders of products”.

The exhibition of student design – work from 27 schools of fine arts from all over Japan – has a more circumscribed theme – the chair. “Suwaru Katachi: The Way we Sit” shows a selection of 300 projects providing an overview of the academic world of design in Japan.

As well as these official events, seminars and private views will be held all over the city during the five days dedicated to Japanese design.
