Timo Sarpaneva: retrospective in Helsinki

An exhibition which recounts not just the history of Finnish designer sculptor born in 1926, but also the story of Finnish industry itself, a contributing factor in his success. The retrospective dedicated to Timo Sarpaneva at the Museum of Art and Design in Helsinki – result of a donation made in 1995 – gives a broad vision of his work but also describes the history and evolution of Finnish design over the course of fifty years: in total 400 pieces made in his favourite materials – glass and steel – as well as wood, porcelain and fabric.

Amongst the early examples of his talent the exhibition includes a embroidered teapot cover from 1950, which won him the silver medal at the Triennale in Milan in 1951, and his creations in glass for the Finnish company Iittala in the fifties: the sculptures Hiindenhelmi and Hiidennyrkki along with bottles in the shape of birds and plates in coloured glass. Also included is the series of metal pans for Rosenlew from the sixties with plates and carafes in steel for Opa Oy. Objects which have now well known such as the Finlandia vases, the Arcipelago sculptures and the crockery in porcelain and ceramic designed for Rosenthal, together with the Claritas and Marcel series from the eighties and nineties respectively.
