Udinese “doc”, born in 1933, Sacco is the designer who was responsible for making the company Mercedes famous around the world. He forms a significant example in understanding how design plays an important part in economic growth and the degree of innovation in a company.
He began very young – in 1958, aged just 25 – in the styling department of the automobile manufacturer in Stuttgart. Sacco then went on to be the director for over twenty years, from 1975 to 1999. From some of the masters of car design, Ghia and Pininfarina, he absorbed a flair for working with materials, shapes and volumes and a vocation for technological innovation. He also addressed themes which have today become of prime importance such as safety and ecology, in for example designs of the series 600 limousine or the Mercedes Benz ESV (Experimental Safety Vehicle), developed working alongside Bela Barenyi, a pioneer in the field of “passive safety”.
In his honour, Udine will be organising an exhibition of a collection of designs and images (open until 26 May), an open air exhibition – in the piazza in front of the Municipio – of collectors cars and prototypes, screenings of interviews and key moments in his career, and a monographic catalogue in a signed and limited edition. The designer will also be receiving an honorary degree in mechanical engineering which will be awarded by the University of Udine.
