Pino Zac, irreverent illustrator

Everybody is naked to Roberto Zaccaria, in art Zac, who has a predilection for men in power. A hundred works by the eminent cartoonist, writer, animator and founder of satirical magazines like “I Quaderni del Sale” and “Il Male” are on view at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome from 28 March to 12 April.

His passion has caused him not a few headaches, as in the case of the twenty-seven cartons of Georges Pompidou which led to a warrant for his arrest. Zac left France and took refuge in Rome. Or when, in Prague, he drew the end of the Czechoslovakian Spring stifled by the tanks of the Warsaw Pact, and was duly expelled. An eclectic artist, he has spent a lifetime collecting court cases against his ferocious and desecrating cartoons.

Pino Zac has tried his hand at every form of illustration, producing books, record sleeves, playing cards, greeting cards, theatre costumes and sets, posters and animated cinema. Besides having founded “I Quaderni del Sale”, and its offshoots “Il Male” and the magazine “Anamorfico”, Pino Zac has contributed to the French satirical weekly “Le Canard Enchâiné”, the Belgian magazine “Pourquoi Pas?” and the British “Playtime”.
