Fabrica, the Bologna centre for culture and communications, plays homage to Alan Fletcher, one of the most famous and admired graphic designers from around the world, with the presentation of his new book and an exhibition on his most significant work.

Friday 18 January at 18.00 at Fabrica Features “The art of looking sideways” (pub. Phaidon, 2001) will be under discussion, an endless source of anecdotes, quotes, images, curious facts, useful information, quirks, jokes, memories. An exploration into the work of the eye, the hand, the brain and the imagination, presented across pages which demonstrate a highly expressive use of typography, space, colour and the language of images.

Alan Fletcher began his career in New York where he worked for Fortune magazine, the Container Corporation and IBM. In 1932 he moved to London and with Fletcher/Forbes/Gill worked for prestigious clients such as Pirelli, Cunard, Penguin Books, BP and Olivetti, with projects which were irreverent, intelligent and witty and which became icons in the world of graphics and design. In 1972 he founded Pentagram, one of the most influential studios of graphics and interior retail design whose clients included Reuters, Lucas Industries, The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, The Victoria & Albert Museum, Lloyd's of London, Daimler Benz, Arthur Andersen & Co and ABB. In 1992 he left Pentagram and to dedicate himself to his own London based studio. Amongst his major clients are Domus, Dentsu, London Transport and Toyota.
