Over two thousand objects to capture the importance, influence and potential of design in our daily lives will make up an exhibition organised by Jeffrey Kipnis which is due to open 2 February at the Wexner Center for The Arts in Columbus (Ohio). It aims to use a “river” of objects to create different and contrasting moods in visitors: anger, joy, amazement, to provoke thought on the importance of good design in everyday life.
Over two hundred names involved from twelve different countries: from the well known (Greg Lynn, Ross Lovegrove, Issey Miyake, Philippe Starck and Hussein Chalayan) to younger emerging talent.
The title of the exhibition comes from a slogan coined by the father of American functionalist architecture Philip Johnson – who has also written an introduction in the catalogue – for the exhibition “Machine Art” held at MoMA in 1934.
To coincide with the event three months of conferences are to be held by a series of well known personalities from art and design Robert A. M. Stern (13 February), John Pawson (27 February), Paola Antonelli (6 March), Mark Gonzales (7 March), Murray Moss (12 March), Jan Kaplicky (10 April), Hussein Chalayan (24 April), Fabian Marcaccio and Sachico Kodama (26 April) e Ross Lovegrove and Greg Lynn (in May).
