“In recent years BMW has moved in progression from one series to another in its models. But looking harder, over a longer period, BMW, like other manufacturers, moves like this: a generational leap, then a series of progressions, then another leap. So, we are coming from a period of progressions, now we are ready for the leap”. In other words: BMW is about to change, and change radically. And the director of this change is Chris Bangle, aged 44 who since 1992 has been head of design at the Bavarian company. Bangle, married with children, speaks Italian, he was born in Ravenna. Not in the Italian region of Romagna, however, but in the American state of Ohio. He studied first in Wisconsin, then in California: Bangle is one of the many prodigal sons of the Pasadena Art College of Design. “There is a need to experiment even in BMW, to go outside the idea of the car but that at the same time, it is always a car and a BMW car” says Bangle, who speaks Italian as a result of seven years spent with Fiat, where he created such uncompromised models as the “Coupé”. Also at BMW Bangle seems set to leave a legacy which will be much talked about. An idea of where he intends to go already exists, it’s called “ZP” and it’s the prototype, or rather concept car, that was shown at the last Frankfurt fair. In this car many themes of the BMW of tomorrow can already be seen.
