Assab One

This industrial building began a new life in 2002 almost by chance.

This industrial building began a new life in 2002 almost by chance.

When its owner Elena Quarestani transformed it from a printing fi rm’s premises into a place for creating and promoting contemporary art in Milan. In the fi rst exhibition, the artists took over the space while it was still fi lled with machines and production objects, incorporating them into their work.

Today, after numerous events, the presence of a “four-colour” Roland Ultra from 1968 keeps the identity of the place alive. Since 2004 Assab One (the name is inspired by the location, Assab is the name of an African port) has been a nonprofi t organisation promoting multidisciplinary art projects in an attempt to address a wide audience. The exhibition "Nostalghia" by the artist Alessandro Mencarelli is programmed until April 18, and other initiatives during the month will be announced on the website. Silvia Monaco
