Any 18th-century cartographer worth his salt would probably have always carried with him a small, 7.5-centimetrediameter pocket globe, stored in its shell painted with the map of the sky.

This object, a synthesis of art and science, represents just a taste of the rich patrimony of globes and spatial representations of earth and sky on show at the Museo Correr in Venice until February 29, 2008. Silvia Monaco
