Ellen Gallagher: deLuxe

Described by critics as “slyly, lovely and perversely indirect”, Ellen Gallagher’s paintings take on demanding themes, such as racial identity and its consequences in contemporary society.

With this in mind, the American artist (born in 1965) works on the stereotypes of black culture and enlarges and translates them into more or less abstract signs. With a selection of around sixty works, the Whitney pays homage to her talent and offers a “debut portfolio” of one of the most important American artists of her generation. E.S.
