Art and times of Dieter Roth at P.S.1 and MoMA
With 375 works – five large scale installations, drawings, graphics, books, paintings, sculptures, videos and films – covering five decades of artistic career, the retrospective that opens tonight at both the MoMA and P.S.1 in New York promises to be the biggest ever dedicated to Dieter Roth (1930-1998). It is also the first complete collection ever to be put together in the US of the work of the provocative and irreverent Swiss artist.
The exhibition, organised by MoMA in collaboration with the Schaulager foundation in Basel and the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, celebrates the unique career of one of the major artists of the twentieth century, one who has always looked to marginalized places to express his creativity, such as Switzerland and Iceland, and used unconventional materials, cheese, chocolate, cocoa powder and liquorice sticks. Chaotic and innovative, inspired and always lucid, the work brought together in this vast exhibition mirrors an entire epoch. E.S.
