“Nothing ever happens?” - Yoshitomo Nara will change that

“In the Cloud 2003” is the latest work by the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Based in Tokyo, Nara is one of the most interesting young voices of the last decade. His imagery, featuring flat graphics and influenced by cartoons, graffiti and the Japanese punk-rock (sub) culture, is gripping the western world.

The ICA of Philadelphia’s idea was prompted by this and, given the constant cutbacks being applied to culture by local and central government, it has decided to rely on its own efforts (and those of the artist). Turned into 150 signed and numbered lithographs, “In the Cloud 2003” will be sold by the Institute for between 500 dollars (the first 50) and 750 and more (the others). What for? To finance the artist’s one-man exhibition “Yoshitomo Nara: Nothing Ever Happens”, scheduled from January (until April) at the ICA in Philadelphia organised by MOCA Cleveland. It is a – concrete – response to the constant cutbacks to culture by local and central government.
