Gardens as works of art at the Certosa in Padula

Create a new look, at least temporarily, for the historic gardens of five Carthusian monks cells. This is the theme of “Ortus Artis” in which five landscape architects: Atelier Le Balto, Helene Hölzl, Victor Beiramar Diniz, Topotek1 and West8 put their skills to the test in the precious context of Certosa di San Lorenza at Padula, near Salerno.

The results could not be more varied: from the dazzling environment of sand, vegetation and water by French collective Le Balto to the symbolic garden, literally invaded by thousands of pine cones by the Dutch group West8. Moving on to the steel basins covered in a veil of water designed by Portughese architect Victor Beiramar Diniz to the minimalist intervention that respects the wild and abandoned environment of cell no. 21 by Helene Hölzl and the optical play of surfaces by Berlin practice Topotek1.

Curated by Achille Bonito Olive, the initiative is not limited just to the exhibition of five projects but is also an occasion to examine and compare current developments in the field of contemporary landscape architecture at an international level. An international landscaping workshop dedicated to the contemporary garden is planned for the 7 to 14 September – taking part will be students from around ten universities and landscape schools – and from 9 to 13 September, a conference will be held entitled “Costruire l’eterogeneo: il progetto del giardino contemporaneo” (building the heterogeneous – the design of the contemporary garden) which aims to look at the garden as a work of art.
