His series dedicated to museums – the Uffizi, the Louvre and the National Gallery in London – being particularly strong examples. Dedicated to the Berlin Pergamon Museum is instead a series on show (until the end of February) at the Galleria De Cardenas in Milan. The atmosphere in his photos is estranging – in the vast hall of the museum is housed the altar of Pergamo, brought to Germany from Turkey during the time of the founding of the Prussian state, the visitors alongside the monumentality of the relief work contribute to emphasise a situation which already seems somewhat unreal. Authentic visitors blend with stand ins (around 150 in each image) which create the effect of a Hollywood set.
In February, Struth’s images will be the protagonists of an important retrospective at the Metropolitan in New York.
