Debora Hirsch: a journey around the person

The way that time passes and changes things, in particular a person and their identity is the theme which dominates the work of Debora Hirsch, born in Brazil now based in Milan. Her work is developed through different media – painting, through which the artist has become known to the public, and digital video.

The exhibition on at the Milan gallery Antonio Colombo presents a number of new paintings – after the intriguing and arrogant women of the first series, the artist has concentrated on an attention to detail which has resulted in an almost scientific representation of the body, underlining the passing of time. Assisting in this evolution is the choice of a painting technique which is less related to pop art and closer instead to hyper-realism.

Seen also in the video work – in “Lachesis” over the course of a few minutes we see the effects of time on the face of a woman with all the consequences that it brings. Whilst in “In Thin Net Toe”, a visibly virtual character recites “L’Infinito” by Giacomo Leopardi with the help of English phonetics, a verbal alteration which re-echoes the physical one of the face.
