Aaron, the cybernetic artist

by Stefania Garassini Can a form of software be considered an artist? This issue, whilst taking us back to the golden age of artificial intelligence when the main preoccupation of information technologists was to build “thinking machines”, is in reality still with us. At least so it seems, judging by the performance of Aaron, a programme created by British painter Harold Cohen – and produced by Kurzweil CyberArt Technologies, Inc. – able to make drawings autonomously which are different each time. Aaron is linked to a plotter which prints the compositions onto paper, previously only in black and white, now in the latest versions also in colour.
