Opening of the 49th Venice Biennale
The first edition of the 21st century presents itself with this theme: Platea dell’umanità - Plateau of Humankind - Plateau der Menschheit - Plateau de l’humanité.
Harald Szeemann, director of the Visual Arts division, has chosen the term "plateau" because "... it contains many accesses: it is an overelevated stage, it is a base and a foundation, it is a platform. The Biennale of Visual Arts is like a platform for humanity."
In this way the 49th Biennale is born as a long voyage in art that begins, not by coincidence, with the social utopia of Joseph Beuys (1968), to then develop as a pathway of more than 100 artists that winds from the Padiglione Italia to the Giardini, from the spaces of the Arsenale to the Corderie, from the Artiglierie to the Gaggiandre.
There are no geographical or thematic boundaries, to the visual arts are added the contributions of cinema, poetry, music, theatre and dance, in an enormous project of interaction among the arts. Venice, therefore, is like a fulcrum in a unique large event able to catalyze the attention of the international artistic world..
