Architect: Studio MAAC
Project: Ouidah Cultural Arena
Location: Ouidah, Djegbadji, Republic of Benin
Area: 2600 square meters
Designed by Studio MAAC on the Marina of Ouidah, in Benin, this arena is conceived to engage in a dialogue with its surroundings. A coastline that, from the mid-16th century, was one of the main hubs of transatlantic exchange—and a place inextricably bound to the slave trade—now attempts to assume a new meaning through a cultural device that will host performances within its cavea. The stands accommodate up to 3,500 spectators and are organised through a network of circulation routes that clearly separate public access, VIP entrances, technical areas, and emergency exits, ensuring safety and efficiency during large-scale events. Despite the strong presence of enclosing walls—required for security—the forum opens up at several points, sharing with the adjacent Atlantic shoreline natural light and atmospheric conditions. The undulating roof, composed of retractable canopies and fixed steel structures, is designed to shelter the audience while simultaneously echoing the motion of the waves.
