A new showroom in Bangkok is a tribute to Thai craftsmanship

By combining Western and Asian influences in design and furnishings, Studio Daminato makes the new Chanintr brand showroom in Bangkok a welcoming "home away from home".

Two buildings united by a garden and a century-old tree, are especially designed by Studio Daminato (interior design)  and Tierra Design (architecture) to house CHANINTR CRAFT amidst the bustling shops and restaurants of downtown Bangkok. As a multi-brand department store, the idea of the showroom is to be both a "home" for design pieces from all over the world, from Japan to Scandinavia, and a place to develop projects and display products made by local craftsmen.

Light-coloured terrazzo floors, parchment walls, natural plaster, wood panels and a bright natural light gently diffuses throughout the spaces in the showroom. With this palette of pale colours and understated finishes the space becomes a cosy, domestic "white cube" for the display of each single piece of furniture.

But it is in the Café area that the most typically Thai details are captured. It’s on the ground floor that Café Craft embraces the courtyard and welcomes visitors with a curved wrap-around wall covered in handcrafted ochre-coloured tiles inspired by bamboo. The ceilings, covered with terracotta-coloured ceramic tiles and the oat-coloured terrazzo floor, combined with the use of ash panels and natural cork characterize the rooms, as in most traditional Thai homes.
