Located in the industrial neighborhood of Riga, Latvia, Zuzeum is a multifunctional art centre that contributes to the cultural growth of the city, encouraging interaction and new discussions within a dynamic and cosmopolitan context. The centre, designed by interior design firm Annvil, is located in a cork factory from 1910, between Riga’s historical centre and the future Rail Baltica linking Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius and Warsaw.
Zuzeum: Riga’s new art centre is defined by orange volumes and old bricks
The multifunctional space designed by Annvil studio is located inside a cork factory built in 1910 and now transformed into a meeting space and a vehicle for the city’s cultural growth.

A 4,000 square metre space dedicated to art that includes two exhibition galleries, a sculpture garden and a workshop area, together with a café, a shop and a roof-terrace with seating. This multifunctional approach, which serves to make maximum use of the structure throughout the day, also includes an outdoor space that becomes a public square for the community.
While the original industrial structure has been left visible – external brick walls and internal white-painted walls, metal beams and pillars, brick chimney in one of the galleries –, on the other hand it has been modified with the use of colour and the addition of volumes.
The choice of orange, a shade expressing strength and energy, defines Zuzeum starting from the square, highlighting areas of passage, stairs and ramps that thus emerge in a chromatic contrast. Orange perforated surfaces add a touch of humour to the cultural centre, while the galleries maintain a neutral tone.
