Yellow takeover in a music school in Portugal

The new intervention by Aurora Arquitectos for the Artave – CCM Music School in Caldas da Saúde connects the different pre-existing spaces and offers new community spaces to the students.

With a new yellow extension, Aurora Arquitectos links the buildings of the Artave – CCM Music School in Caldas da Saúde, a few kilometres from Porto. The architects apparently want to break away from the architectural confusion of the ensemble of existing buildings, resulting from the stratification over time of various interventions on the structure.

The new volume sneaks into the interstitial spaces between the blocks and leaves the individuality of the existing buildings intact. Along with vertical and horizontal connections for the school areas, Aurora Arquitectos designs new meeting spaces for students, as well as an outdoor amphitheatre for collective meetings. The large opening of the new intervention punctually relates to the remarkable elements of the context: a small forest and a Magnolia grandiflora.
