Tikari Works has completed The Rye Apartments in London, transforming a post-war building and four garages into a series of accommodations. With a total of 10 apartments, the project is characterized by two residential blocks facing the street, on the corner site opposite Peckham Rye Park, and separated from each other by an inner courtyard.
The multidisciplinary studio – composed of architects, developers and main contractors – proposes a new housing scheme that aims to generate a sense of belonging and community in the residents: the two buildings are integrated into the urban context of Victorian terraces and social housing of the 1980s, recalling their materiality through a red brick shingle cladding. The specular apartments, two per floor, include up to three bedrooms.
Contrasting with the colour of the facades, a grey concrete plinth runs along the entire site lifting the structures and resolving the different heights of the ground. From this arrangement, the studio created spaces for bicycles and walls to separate the apartments from the street. The volume of the buildings is broken by windows, which are cranked along the roof, and by the voids generating space for balconies and terraces.
The buildings have been constructed with attention to sustainability and energy efficiency: the interiors are entirely covered with Cross Laminated Timber and a dry construction system has been used so that the materials can be reused in the future. Photovoltaic panels and solar control glazing have also been installed.
