A kindergarten to explore in Chongqing

Nine independent units with pitched roofs make up a small village that children can freely discover.

The kindergarten designed by IDO –  Init Design Office is more than a space dedicated to childhood and protected from congestion in Chongking, but it is a building capable of generating an independent landscape, in which the children can freely express themselves.

The structure consists of nine volumes with iconic pitched roofs, whose distribution on different levels allows children to enjoy distinct heights and perspectives, as well as exploring the common spaces as if they were in a small village. Each class is in a block that is independent of its domestic appearance, among which a “neighbourhood” relationship is established.

The volumes are covered with combinations of different materials – cement, panels and grids of wood, polycarbonate, brick and terracotta – emphasising the chaotic and playful character of the kindergarten.
