The International Award for Sustainable Architecture has reached its thirteenth edition this year with the participation of 101 projects from over 25 countries.
The event was conceived and promoted in 2003 by the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and the Company Fassa Bortolo on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of its foundation and aims to promote forms of architecture where energy performance and respect for the environment are linked to the architectural quality of the project. Moreover environmental, economic, cultural, social and energy sustainability are top priorities.

The "Responsible Architectures” will be awarded the prize conceived and promoted by the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and the Building Company Fassa Bortolo on 26th June in Ferrara.

The initiative annually alternates between a section reserved to degree, master and doctoral theses and another dedicated to the works carried out by professionals.
The committee, chaired by Professor Thomas Herzog - Thomas Herzog Architekten, Munich, Germany – was composed of Anne Lacaton - Lacaton & Vassal architects, Paris - Xu Tiantian - DnA Design and Architecture Studio, Beijing - and the Professors of the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara Theo Zaffagnini and Nicola Marzot.
The winner of the Gold Medal for Sustainable Architecture was the Mexican Firm PLUG Architecture (Roman Cordero, Izbeth Mendoza) with the project “Infiltrated Patio”, a house built around a centuries-old tree in Mérida, Yucatán.
The two silver medals in the competition went to ARQUITECTURIA (Josep Camps & Olga Felip) in Barcelona for the Court of Justice building in Balaguer, Spain and to the project for the conversion of the Opificio Golinelli of the Diverserighestudio (Simone Gheduzzi, Nicola Rimondi, Gabriele Sorichetti) in Bologna.
The four honourable mentions were given to Bernardo Bader Architects for the Chapel in Salgenreute Krumbach in Austria, to Vector Architects, Dong Gong, for the Alila Yangshuo project, a tourist accommodation facility in Yangshuo City in China, to SUMO Arquitectes + Y.Olmo - Marc Camallonga, Jordi Pagès, Pasqual Bendicho + Yolanda Olmo for the Vil.la Urània Civic Centre in Barcelona and Werner Sobek with Dirk E. Hebel and Felix Heisel for the NEST Unit UMAR project, an experimental unit for urban extraction and recycling in Dübendorf, Switzerland.
Five other projects from Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Djibouti were also selected.
The Special Fassa Bortolo Award went to the Ravenna Officina Meme Architetti Studio for the Darsena Pop up Project. This award is given to the designers who, in compliance with the principles of sustainability and architectural quality, have been able to use the solutions belonging to the Fassa Bortolo Integrated System.
The award ceremony will be held in Ferrara on 26th June 2019 at the Salone d'Onore in Palazzo Tassoni at 16.00 and will be opened by a lectio magistralis by Anne Lacaton entitled "Making with...the already there". The award-winning designers will then present their work to the public.
