Red House

In the São Miguel Island, Azores, the project by Pedro Maurício Borges enhances the character of the pre-existent house, in a L shape, ‘tuning’ it without the perception of added or deducted elements.

Pedro Maurício Borges, Red House
The pre-existent house was located in a L shape at the end of the lot, closer to the cliffs.
In the fold of the L, the house arises two levels, with a room served by a terrace that covers the ground floor. The volume of this terrace ends in the east curved wall, embraced by a parallel staircase. This fan shaped staircase, the curved wall, as well as the porch and the red walls were the house's most expressive features. We maintained the terrace of the pre-existing house and made of its curved stairs the moto for the design of the new, doors included.

From the old house we also took the red and reproposed a seated porch opened to the south and sheltered from the sea winds of the north.

The extension enhances the character of the pre-existent house, 'tuning' it without the perception of added or deducted elements, but as if it popped up from the same drawing. The prominent location, marked by the red colour, turns the house into a landmark on the north shoreline of the island.
