“Being modern doesn’t mean being against history or a people’s culture”, maintains Álvaro Siza who last year celebrated his seventieth birthday.

His work – 250 projects in a fifty year long career as one of the leading protagonists of contemporary Portugal – features in a major exhibition at the New York gallery of Max Protetch. Attention is focussed on five projects in particular (one for each decade from the fifties up until today) - Boa Nova Teahouse, Alves Santos House, Banco Borges & Irmao, Carlos Ramos Pavilion, Galician Museum of Contemporary Art, 5:50 Tea Set – and on half a century’s worth of drawings, furniture and objects.

To complete the exhibition, curated by Ohm Design, the New York based company that distributes worldwide furniture designed by Siza, is the presentation of a tea set in porcelain, silver and wood, designed specially for the occasion. Produced in 15 numbered sets that will be sold to museums and collectors. E.S.
