Reopening of the Gallery of Victoria extended by Bellini
The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne reopens to the public today following extension and refurbishment by Mario Bellini, who for the last years has been working in collaboration with Australian practice Metier 3.
Right from the start of the project the design was developed in such a way as to respect the existing building – outer walls in basalt, glazed ceilings and original materials from the gallery such as terracotta floors and timber walls frame Bellini’s design for the addition of new galleries. Colour has played a primary role with various shades of green and grey against the steel and burnished metals.
