Raise the curtain as architecure takes the stage
Models, photographs and videos are used to present the most important phases in the construction of a theatre - from antiquity to the present day. This, in short, is what to expect from the exhibition being held at the Pinakothek der Moderne, in Munich (until 18 January). Approximately one hundred buildings are on show, divided into four categories: the arena (stage in the centre), the proscenium, the peepshow and, later, the new 20th-century types.
The route comprises the most spectacular and the most innovatory achievements; there is the Universal Theater by Frederick Kiesler (1962), a multipurpose structure based on flexibility and adaptability that adheres to the concept of infinite space. Plus Walter Gropius’ Total Theater (1926-27), where spectators could see (and hear) every thing in full.
