More than three hundred period drawings, old photographs, plans and records - most never seen before and from French and Algerian collections - bear witness to an exceptional period that saw some of the greatest international architects, Viollet-le-Duc, Henri Sauvage, Auguste Perret, Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, at work at various times.
From the beginning of French rule in 1830, it moves on to the construction of the port and the first monumental infrastructures, e.g. the Boulevard de l’Imperatrice, which then resulted in a long succession of projects for the seafront. However, the 1930s marked the turning point for the urban landscape with the construction of the Palais du Governement.
This was followed by repeated attempts to curb the indiscriminate growth of the city and, in the post-war years, the Constantine plan with the accelerated pace imposed by the war of independence. Lastly, the pictures by Dominique Delaunay offer a fresco of the contemporary urban reality.
This initiative comes within the scope of “Djazaïr, une année de l’Algérie en France” and will continue in September in Algiers and Montréal.
