Jerusalem: Gehry’s Center for Human Dignity

The design for the new Center for Human Dignity-Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem MOTJ, by Frank Gehry has been presented to the press in Jerusalem. The centre will be built in the heart of Jerusalem, near Independence Park.

The campus, which covers an area of around 22 000 square metres, will include the Museum of Tolerance, a theatre complex, international conference centre, an imposing hall, a school and library. A 28 metre high glazed atrium will connect the main elements of the campus which also include an exhibition gallery, reading room, museum shop, restaurants and gardens.

MOTJ’s “mission” is to focus on issues which regard human dignity and individual responsibility, attempting to promote unity and respect between Jews and people of all religions thanks to an environment free from a political, theological or ideological position. The idea to build a complex of this kind comes as a result of the success of the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles which was the first to use experiential teaching and interactive methods to promote tolerance.

The aim of MOTJ is to move the visitor from being immersed in the problem to participating in a solution. Building costs amount to 150 million dollars whilst the opening is expected for 2006/7
